Pbem'ing isn't bad in that you have a chat log that plays back along with your moves so you can still heckle and comment while you're playing your turn and then read your opponents while he does his. We agree the biggest appeal of boardgaming is actually sitting in front of your opponent and witnessing the dice rolls and the frustrations and triumphs that come with that. I enjoy pbem'ing the games the most as I can take my leisurly time in getting a turn completed however I do enjoy the occassional online game using a VOIP application like Skype. There's a few others but I think those are the "big 3" at the moment. Some of the older titles aren't very slick looking, but with rules enforcement and an easy way to find opponents, this is a nice choice if you're just learning a game perhaps. Online play (only at the moment) that does support rules enforcement for the few games that it has to offer. A newcomer that has a slick interface and fancy zooming/scrolling and is an easy to make gamebox (no coding) application. ZunTzu: Supports online play (only at this time). They are all similar but offer their own unique set of features:Ĭyberboard: supports Pbem play (only at this time). It is great! It revived my board wargaming addiction! You will need to know the rules (as it does not enforce any rules) and you may need any charts that the game uses.Ĥ.

You won't need to set up the game or use any of the pieces when playing on VASSAL. In most cases, you do need the original copy of the rules.

It is merely a tool that represents the boardgame version of games on the computer screen.ģ. There is no artificial intelligence or computer opponent in any of the games. You can play online or via Pbem (by sending recorded logs of your game).

It is free, though Rodney Kinney and the rest of the programmers sure would love a donation every now and then to help keep the website running and the software up to date.Ģ. Welcome to VASSAL - I and many others have been using it for years now.ġ. It's a lot easier for a company to get people to continue playing the game and buying their products if they have been continually engaged than it is to convince lapsed gamers and customers to pick it up again.OK,bit thick but here goes.I have come across a thing clled Vassal engine. Now it seems to me that this is a bit of software that enables you to play computer versions of old board wargames.A few things have arisen in my mind.ġ.It looks as though its free,is it?(i dont mind paying but hey.)Ģ.Do you HAVE to play online or can you play against a computer opponent?ģ.Do you HAVE to have the original version of the game,ie an actual physical version? In fact, if I were to go out on a limb, I would say that PP is probably happy that Wartable came out during the current unpleasantness, as it makes it a lot easier for people who aren't so much into hobby and lore to continually engage with the game and their products. And if they saw a serious opportunity for growth in playing Warmachine online, we might see things like licensing, collaboration, and official modules in the future - like we see with Roll20 and D&D.

For people who just want a tactically interesting game that they can play on their computer, they going to play League of Legends or some other strategy game that was designed from the ground up as a PC game, because that is always going to be a better experience than trying to play a miniatures game or a board game through a computer interface.Įven if people are using Wartable to try out new armies, that's not really any different from playing in person and using proxies, which is fairly common.Īlso, if PP considered it to be an infringement on their IP and a threat to their business model, we would have heard about it by now from them (or their lawyers). For Warmachine players, interfaces like Wartable and Vassal are pretty much always going to be a distant second to actually playing Warmachine. The only people who are going to be into Wartable are going to be people who already play Warmachine but can't do it in person for whatever reason. I don't think there will be a significant number of people who will only play Warmachine online and won't buy models or play in person. First, it isn't so much a new issue as Vassal has been around for years, as have other fan-made resources like Warmachine University, Conflict Chamber, etc. As a player, I wouldn't be worried about copyright infringement or IP ethics on Wartable.
